You’re Missing Out On Great Literature Because Of The Genre Divide In Music

Why I made a Twitter bot that tweets lyrics to the songs I listen to.

I tend to pay a lot of attention to every aspect of a track. Like I often I find myself in my room solemnly listening to music and trying to interpret the meaning behind the words to a song. What did the songwriter intend to say? How do I interpret it? Stuff like that.

Also, as someone who never had the talent to be cathartic with words(or through any other medium for that matter), too often I come across a piece of lyric that makes me find myself saying, “Damn, I wish I wrote that”.

I don’t think a lot of people consider lyrics as literature and treat it as such. There is no reason for it right? It’s written with words and is supposed to convey a message or emotions. So on paper (pun intended & I despise myself for it now), it should be considered as art, even when it’s not accompanied by a melody.

I feel like a lot of people are missing out on great pieces of literature because of the genre divide in music. Yes, you may have missed out on an incredibly profound message just because you don’t listen to a particular genre. Music taste is very, very subjective, I understand. You may not like the sound of indie folk or dream pop or nu metal or RnB, but have you ever considered listening to what it is that they are trying to say? Maybe you might not like the sound, but you just might like the message.

So I decided to make a simple Twitter bot that tweets lyrics to the songs I’m listening to on Spotify in real-time. It just tweets one verse at random from the song, sometimes just one line. With no context. No artist name, no song name. Stripped down to just plain words, ready for your interpretation. Sometimes it’s a cliched love song, sometimes it’s incredibly profound. Sometimes it’s highly poignant, sometimes awfully blunt. Sometimes it’s repetitive, sometimes structured like a haiku.

So if you are a writer or poet looking for inspiration or someone who just loves reading, go on and check out the twitter profile. But do make sure you don’t follow it because it most definitely will spam your feed. If you like the content, remember the username or if you are a power user, put it in a list. Treat it like your fridge: go check it out when you are bored.

And if you really, really like the content, maybe you’ll like them in the form the artist intended: a song. You can find the music I like in the many, many, many (too many) playlists I have on my spotify.
